Overview
Blue tansy essential oil (BTEO), derived from the Mediterranean plant *Tanacetum annuum* L., is a natural product traditionally valued for its anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic properties. Its characteristic deep blue color is attributed to chamazulene, a sesquiterpene formed during the steam distillation process. BTEO contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including sabinene, camphor, myrcene, and β-pinene, as well as flavonoids like apigenin and luteolin. Research indicates that BTEO possesses antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Candida albicans*, as well as antioxidant and cytotoxic effects. While it is widely used in cosmetic and dermatologic formulations for inflammatory skin conditions, current evidence for its therapeutic efficacy is primarily based on preclinical models.
