Overview

Blumea balsamifera, commonly known as Sambong, is a traditional medicinal plant native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, where it is officially recognized by the Department of Health (DOH) as an effective herbal medicine. Developed through research by the National Integrated Research Program on Medicinal Plants (NIRPROMP) at the University of the Philippines Manila, Blumea balsamifera is commercially manufactured by companies such as Azarias Pharmaceutical Laboratories and Pascual Laboratories. It is primarily indicated as an anti-urolithiasis agent to facilitate the dissolution and passage of kidney stones (urinary tract stones) and as a diuretic to manage edema and fluid retention associated with mild to moderate congestive heart failure. The therapeutic effects of Blumea balsamifera are attributed to its rich phytochemical profile, which includes volatile oils (such as l-borneol, camphor, and limonene) and bioactive flavonoids (such as blumeatin, luteolin, and quercetin) that exhibit diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties.
