Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Blumea balsamifera leaf extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the *Blumea balsamifera* plant, a member of the Asteraceae family commonly known as Sambong in the Philippines and Ngai Camphor in China. It is widely utilized in traditional and clinical medicine across Southeast Asia for its diuretic, anti-urolithiasis, and anti-inflammatory properties. The extract contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including L-borneol, flavonoids (such as blumeatin and quercetin), and essential oils. Its primary clinical application is the treatment of kidney stones (urolithiasis) and edema, where it acts by promoting diuresis and inhibiting the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. Emerging research, as highlighted in recent publications, also explores its potential hepatoprotective and anti-atherosclerotic effects, suggesting it may modulate inflammation and lipid metabolism in the context of high-cholesterol diets and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
