BM219 is an oral small molecule antiviral candidate developed by Shenzhen Baiming Pharmaceutical in collaboration with The Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen for the treatment of COVID-19. It functions as a 3C-like protease (3CLpro, also known as Mpro) inhibitor, targeting a highly conserved enzyme essential for the replication of SARS-CoV-2. By blocking the activity of this protease, BM219 prevents the processing of viral polyproteins into functional units, effectively halting the viral life cycle. Unlike some other 3CL inhibitors, BM219 is reported to be a non-covalent inhibitor that may not require co-administration with ritonavir for pharmacokinetic boosting. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19.
