BMD-122 (N-benzyl-N-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanamide) is a selective small molecule inhibitor of 12-lipoxygenase (12-LOX). 12-LOX is an enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoate (12-HETE), a lipid mediator implicated in cancer progression and angiogenesis. Research conducted by investigators at Henry Ford Health System and Wayne State University has shown that BMD-122 inhibits the proliferation and survival of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells in vitro and induces apoptosis. Furthermore, BMD-122 has been shown to decrease the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and inhibit tumor-induced angiogenesis. In preclinical mouse models of ovarian cancer, systemic administration of BMD-122 resulted in a significant reduction in tumor volume, suggesting its potential as an adjuvant therapy for ovarian cancer.
