Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BMS-936559 is a humanized IgG4 monoclonal antibody that targets programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). By binding to PD-L1, it blocks the interaction between PD-L1 and its receptor programmed death 1 (PD-1) on T cells. This inhibition releases the "brakes" on T cell activation and proliferation, thereby enhancing immune responses against tumor cells or infected cells. The drug was developed as an immunotherapy for cancer and has also been investigated in HIV infection and sepsis. It was originally developed by Medarex and later by Bristol Myers Squibb. Clinical development has been discontinued for all known indications[1][2][6].
