It functions as an antagonist of Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) and Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8), which are key components of the innate immune system involved in recognizing single-stranded RNA. Dysregulation of these receptors is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
