BMX-010 is a small molecule redox-active metalloporphyrin (specifically a manganese porphyrin) developed by BioMimetix under license from Duke University for the topical treatment of dermatologic conditions. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic. Its mechanism of action includes inhibition of NF-kappa B and stimulation of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), leading to reduced oxidative stress and inflammation. Preclinical studies show that BMX-010 decreases cytokine production in keratinocytes, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells, and T-cells; it also reduces T-cell proliferation and promotes metabolic quiescence in immune cells. These effects are thought to be beneficial for chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis[2][6][9]. Clinical development has focused on topical administration for atopic dermatitis, plaque psoriasis, pruritus, rosacea, acne vulgaris, with some early-stage investigation in type 1 diabetes mellitus and hepatitis C[4][5].
