Overview

BN-82451 is a small molecule neuroprotective agent developed by Ipsen. It is classified as a multitargeting or hybrid molecule with oral bioavailability and good central nervous system penetration. The drug exhibits potent neuronal protection and anti-inflammatory properties through several mechanisms of action, including sodium channel blockade (reducing excitotoxicity), antioxidant activity (inhibiting oxidative stress), cyclooxygenase inhibition (anti-inflammatory effect), and mitochondrial protective effects. Preclinical studies have shown that BN-82451 provides significant neuroprotection in animal models of cerebral ischemia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and especially amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Clinically, it has reached phase II trials for Huntington's disease but development was discontinued for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease[3][4][6].
