Overview

BNN27 is a synthetic small molecule classified as a C17-spiroepoxy derivative of the neurosteroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It is designated a "microneurotrophin" due to its capacity to mimic some neurotrophin functions through direct and selective modulation of neurotrophin receptors, specifically nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors TrkA and p75NTR. BNN27 demonstrates neuroprotective, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic effects in preclinical models. It is notable for lacking classical steroidogenic activity while retaining potent neurotrophic signaling, making it a lead molecule for potential therapies targeting neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases, retinal disorders (such as diabetic retinopathy), cognitive impairment, pain, and spinal cord injury[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
