BNP Sunscreen is an investigational topical formulation developed by Yale University for the prevention of skin cancer. It utilizes bioadhesive nanoparticles (BNPs) composed of poly(d,l-lactic acid)-hyperbranched polyglycerol to encapsulate a combination of organic UV filters (avobenzone and octocrylene) and natural product compounds (ferulic acid, cytisine, diosmin, and trans-resveratrol). The BNPs are engineered to adhere to the skin's surface, preventing the active ingredients from penetrating the epidermis or hair follicles, which avoids systemic absorption. The natural components provide antioxidant properties and quench triplet state energy to inhibit the formation of dark cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), a key driver of UV-induced DNA damage and skin carcinogenesis.
