BNT162b1 is an experimental nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) vaccine candidate developed by BioNTech in collaboration with Pfizer and Fosun Pharma for the prevention of COVID-19. It encodes the trimerized receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). Unlike its sibling candidate BNT162b2 (tozinameran), which encodes the full-length spike protein, BNT162b1 focuses specifically on the RBD to elicit neutralizing antibodies. While it demonstrated robust immunogenicity in early-phase clinical trials, the development program ultimately prioritized BNT162b2 for global pivotal trials and commercialization due to a more favorable safety profile and broader immune response.
