Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BNT162b2 bivalent (wildtype and Omicron BA.1) is a nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This bivalent formulation contains two mRNA components: one encoding the spike glycoprotein of the ancestral (wild-type) SARS-CoV-2 strain and another encoding the spike glycoprotein of the Omicron BA.1 variant (B.1.1.529). Formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the vaccine works by delivering mRNA into host cells, which then produce the stabilized prefusion spike proteins. This process elicits a broad immune response, including neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity, intended to provide enhanced protection against emerging variants.
