Overview

BNT162b5 is a next-generation, bivalent mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. It consists of RNAs encoding enhanced prefusion spike proteins for both the ancestral (wild-type) SARS-CoV-2 strain and an Omicron variant. The spike protein encoded by the mRNAs in BNT162b5 has been modified to increase the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, with the aim of providing more robust, longer-lasting, and broader protection against COVID-19 compared to earlier vaccines. This candidate is part of a long-term strategy to address evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants through improved vaccine design[1][7].
