Overview

BNT163 is an investigational mRNA-based vaccine developed for the prevention of genital lesions caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and potentially also HSV-1. The vaccine encodes three non-infectious HSV-2 glycoproteins designed to induce a broad immune response targeting multiple viral antigens. This approach aims to prevent HSV cellular entry and spread, as well as counteract the immunosuppressive properties of herpes simplex viruses. BNT163 is the first candidate from BioNTech’s infectious disease mRNA vaccine collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania to enter clinical trials. As of late 2022, it entered Phase 1 clinical development in healthy volunteers and individuals with recurrent genital herpes[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
