Boesenbergia rotunda extract, derived from the fingerroot plant (known as Krachai in Thailand), is a botanical medicine being investigated for its antiviral properties, particularly against SARS-CoV-2. Developed by researchers at Mahidol University, the extract contains bioactive prenylated flavonoids such as panduratin A and pinostrobin. In vitro studies have demonstrated that these compounds possess potent inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV-2 replication, potentially by targeting the viral 3C-like protease (3CLpro). Clinical trials are evaluating the extract as a treatment for asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 patients to prevent disease progression and hospitalization.
