Bolasterone is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) and a derivative of testosterone, characterized by methyl groups at both the 7α and 17α positions. This structural modification increases its oral bioavailability and enhances its anabolic properties while maintaining a low to moderate ratio of anabolic to androgenic activity, similar to fluoxymesterone. Bolasterone acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor, promoting protein synthesis and muscle growth through gene expression changes in target tissues such as muscle and bone. Originally developed by Upjohn in the United States during the 1960s under the brand name Myagen, it was primarily indicated for advanced breast cancer in women but also investigated for hematopoietic stimulation and general anabolic effects. Its use is now largely discontinued; it remains banned in sports due to performance-enhancing potential[1][3][5].
