Boldenone is a synthetic anabolic–androgenic steroid (AAS) and a derivative of testosterone developed primarily for veterinary use, especially in horses[1][2][3]. It is not approved for human use in the United States or most other countries. Boldenone acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor and exerts its effects by regulating gene transcription after binding to this receptor[1][3]. Its activity is mainly anabolic with relatively low androgenic potency. The drug increases nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, stimulates appetite, and promotes erythropoietin release from the kidneys[2][3]. While originally developed for medical purposes (with early clinical formulations such as Parenabol), it was discontinued for human use due to lack of therapeutic benefit and potential side effects. Currently, boldenone undecylenate (a long-lasting ester form) remains available under brand names like Equipoise for veterinary applications but is also misused illicitly by athletes seeking performance enhancement[5].
