Boldione is a synthetic anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) and a direct precursor (prohormone) to the anabolic steroid boldenone. Chemically known as androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione or androstadienedione, it features double bonds at positions 1 and 4 of the steroid nucleus with keto groups at positions 3 and 17. Boldione is used industrially as a precursor for various steroid hormones in the estrane and androstane classes[1][2][6]. In humans or animals it can be metabolized into boldenone after administration[6][7]. It has been advertised for its anabolic/androgenic effects such as promoting muscularity and enhancing strength[7], but there are no approved medical indications for its use in humans[2]. Boldione acts primarily by serving as a prohormone to boldenone; both compounds exert their effects through activation of the androgen receptor leading to increased protein synthesis and muscle growth[8]. The drug is banned by sports authorities including WADA due to its performance-enhancing potential[1].
