Autologous bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is a cell-based biologic therapy derived from a patient's own bone marrow, typically harvested from the iliac crest. It is processed via centrifugation to concentrate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelets, and various bioactive molecules, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Rush University Medical Center investigated this therapy as an adjuvant treatment following arthroscopic partial meniscectomy to prevent or slow the progression of osteoarthritis. The therapy aims to modulate the intra-articular environment, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair. A 2024 study by Rush University indicated that while the treatment was safe, it did not significantly improve primary clinical outcomes compared to placebo at one year.
