Overview

Bone marrow cells, in the context of this specific development program by the University of Milano Bicocca, refer to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells harvested from an HLA-matched donor for transplantation into patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). This intervention is targeted at a subset of CML patients (approximately 4-5%) who fail to achieve normal hematopoiesis during treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), leading to severe cytopenias. The transplant procedure aims to provide a sustained, Philadelphia chromosome-negative (Ph-) hematopoietic system. This restoration of normal bone marrow function is intended to facilitate the subsequent administration of TKIs, such as bosutinib, which is used post-transplant due to its lack of Kit inhibition, thereby minimizing toxicity to the newly engrafted hematopoietic cells.
