Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy being developed and evaluated by the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University. These cells are harvested from third-party healthy volunteer donors and are utilized for their potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. In the context of kidney transplantation, particularly from donors after citizen death (DCD), BM-MSCs are administered intravenously to mitigate the risk of graft rejection and delayed graft function (DGF). The therapeutic effect is mediated through the suppression of inflammatory T-cell and B-cell responses, modulation of dendritic cell maturation, and the induction of regulatory T-cells (Tregs), which collectively promote an environment of immune tolerance and facilitate tissue repair in the transplanted organ.
