Overview

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) are an allogeneic cell therapy being developed and evaluated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for the treatment of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). These cells are multipotent, fibroblast-like cells expanded from the bone marrow of healthy volunteers. In the context of aGVHD, BMSCs are administered intravenously to modulate the recipient's immune response and promote tissue repair. They function by migrating to sites of inflammation where they secrete immunomodulatory factors that inhibit the activation and proliferation of donor-derived T cells, which are responsible for attacking host tissues. This therapy is typically investigated as an early intervention in combination with standard corticosteroids to improve clinical outcomes in patients who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
