This investigational cell therapy consists of allogenic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. It is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of active ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The therapy leverages the innate immunoregulatory and immunosuppressive properties of MSCs to modulate dysregulated immune cell populations and reduce systemic inflammation. Administered via intravenous infusion, the treatment aims to induce clinical remission and promote tissue repair in patients who have not responded adequately to conventional therapies. A Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT02809781) has compared its efficacy and safety against the TNF-alpha inhibitor Etanercept, utilizing a protocol of four infusions over 21 days.
