This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) developed by the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. It is specifically being evaluated for the treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver failure, including acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). The therapy functions through immunomodulatory mechanisms, reducing systemic inflammation and the incidence of severe infections, while potentially promoting liver regeneration by differentiating into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. Clinical trials have demonstrated that weekly peripheral intravenous infusions of these cells, often administered in combination with conventional antiviral and hepatoprotective treatments, can significantly improve 24-week survival rates and clinical laboratory parameters such as serum total bilirubin and MELD scores in affected patients.
