Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy being evaluated for their ability to induce immune tolerance in kidney transplant recipients. These cells are derived from third-party donors, expanded ex vivo under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions, and administered to patients receiving kidneys from deceased donors. The primary goal of this therapy is to modulate the recipient's immune system to prevent organ rejection and potentially reduce the requirement for long-term immunosuppressive medication. MSCs exert their immunomodulatory effects through multiple mechanisms, including the suppression of T-cell and B-cell proliferation and the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs). This specific clinical program, led by Monia Lorini, focuses on the safety and mechanistic immunomodulatory effects of these cells in the early post-transplant period.
