Overview

Bone marrow-derived multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (BM-MMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Institute of Cell Therapy (Ukraine) for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. These cells are harvested from bone marrow and administered via intra-articular injection. The therapeutic mechanism is multifaceted, involving the differentiation of cells into chondrocytes to repair cartilage, the secretion of immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and the production of growth factors that stimulate angiogenesis and recruit endogenous progenitor cells. This regenerative approach aims to slow cartilage degeneration and potentially delay or prevent the need for joint replacement surgery. The therapy is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in improving joint function and reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis.
