Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from a patient's own bone marrow. In this specific application by the Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil, the cells are used as an autologous intra-articular injection for the treatment of Grade II-III knee osteoarthritis. BM-MSCs function through immunomodulatory and trophic effects, secreting various cytokines and growth factors that reduce joint inflammation and potentially facilitate cartilage repair. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial to compare its efficacy against adipose-derived stem cells and a combined cell population.
