This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC), is designed for the treatment of pseudarthrosis (nonunion bone fractures). The therapy involves the isolation and in vitro expansion of either autologous or allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs). These cells are then seeded onto a collagen scaffold and incorporated into an autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) clot. During surgery, the resulting construct is implanted directly into the site of the nonunion after the removal of fibrotic tissue. The MSCs are intended to promote bone healing by differentiating into osteogenic cells and secreting paracrine factors that stimulate the natural regenerative processes of the bone tissue.
