Overview

Bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells-derived extracellular vesicles (BM-MSC-EVs) are nanoscale lipid bilayer-enclosed particles released by bone marrow mesenchymal stromal (or stem) cells. These vesicles include exosomes and microvesicles and act as mediators of intercellular communication by transferring proteins, mRNA, non-coding RNAs, and lipids to recipient cells. BM-MSC-EVs exert similar biological effects as their parental MSCs through mechanisms such as receptor-ligand interactions, direct membrane fusion, or endocytosis/phagocytosis. They have shown therapeutic efficacy in various preclinical models for a range of diseases due to their ability to modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair/regeneration, and deliver bioactive molecules. Their use is being explored both as substitutes for intact cell therapies and as vehicles for targeted drug delivery[1][2].
