Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7), also known as osteogenic protein-1 (OP-1), is a recombinant human growth factor belonging to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily[3][8][1]. It plays a critical role in embryogenesis and tissue homeostasis by inducing the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes and osteoblasts—key steps in bone and cartilage formation[3][1]. Mechanistically, BMP-7 binds to specific membrane-bound receptors (BMPR2), activating Smad-dependent signaling pathways that regulate transcription factors such as Runx2 and osterix to promote osteogenesis[3][1]. Clinically, recombinant human BMP-7 has been used for bone fracture repair and spinal fusion procedures. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production in renal disease models[6], and is being explored for potential therapeutic roles in cardiovascular diseases, lupus nephritis[4], neuroprotection after stroke[5], and inhibition of fibrosis through suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)[8].
