Overview

Boostrix-GlaxoSmithKline-Shigellosis is a misnomer for the investigational vaccine candidate **1790GAHB** (also known as **GVGH 1790GAHB**), developed by the **GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health (GVGH)**. The name appears to be a concatenation of the control vaccine (Boostrix), the developer (GSK), and the target indication (Shigellosis) from clinical trial contexts. 1790GAHB is a vaccine designed to prevent **shigellosis** caused by *Shigella sonnei*. It utilizes **Generalized Modules for Membrane Antigens (GMMA)** technology, which involves outer membrane vesicles shed by genetically modified bacteria that overexpress the **O-antigen (OAg)** portion of the **lipopolysaccharide (LPS)**. The vaccine is formulated with **Alhydrogel** (aluminum hydroxide) and administered intramuscularly to induce anti-S. sonnei LPS IgG antibodies. Boostrix itself is a separate GSK vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis and was used as a control in trials for 1790GAHB.
