Borage oil, also known as borage seed oil, is a natural product extracted from the seeds of the Borago officinalis plant. It is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that constitutes approximately 20–26% of the oil. GLA is converted in the body to dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA), which serves as a precursor for anti-inflammatory mediators such as 1-series prostaglandins and 3-series leukotrienes. Borage oil has been used traditionally and in modern herbal medicine for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, atopic eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, osteoporosis, and other inflammatory or endocrine disorders. Its clinical efficacy remains incompletely established. Borage seed oil may be found in foods or skin care products[1][3][4][7].
