Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Borapetol B is a cis-clerodane-type furanoditerpenoid aglycone isolated from the stems of the medicinal plant *Tinospora crispa* (and *Tinospora tuberculata*). It exhibits anti-diabetic properties primarily by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic beta-cells. Preclinical studies in normoglycemic Wistar and spontaneously diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats have demonstrated that oral administration of borapetol B significantly improves blood glucose levels and increases plasma insulin levels. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of L-type voltage-dependent calcium channels and is partly dependent on the closure of ATP-sensitive potassium (K-ATP) channels and G-protein-coupled exocytosis, without causing cellular damage or leakage.
