Bordetella pertussis B1917 is a wild-type bacterial isolate used as a challenge agent in Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM) studies. Developed for clinical research by the University of Southampton, this specific strain was isolated in 2000 from a Dutch patient and is representative of contemporary European isolates. It expresses key virulence factors including pertactin (Prn), pertussis toxin (PT), and filamentous haemagglutinin (FHA). In clinical trials, such as the BPCCS study, the strain is administered intranasally to healthy volunteers to establish a safe and reproducible colonization model. This model is utilized to identify correlates of protection and to accelerate the development of next-generation pertussis vaccines. The B1917 strain is characterized by its sensitivity to azithromycin, ensuring controlled eradication of the bacteria following the study period.
