Overview

Bordetella pertussis J820 is a clinical isolate of the bacterium responsible for pertussis (whooping cough), specifically characterized by the lack of pertactin (PRN) expression. This strain is utilized by Dalhousie University to develop a Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM) to better understand the infection process of modern, PRN-deficient strains that are currently prevalent in North America. The model involves the intranasal administration of the live bacteria to healthy adult volunteers to induce a safe, mild, and self-limiting infection. This research tool is critical for evaluating the efficacy of next-generation pertussis vaccines and identifying correlates of protection in a controlled clinical environment.
