Overview

Boric acid is an inorganic compound with the formula H₃BO₃, commonly used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, and industrial chemical. In medicine, it is primarily utilized for its mild antifungal and antibacterial properties. Boric acid inhibits biofilm formation and hyphal transformation in Candida albicans, which are critical for fungal virulence. It is also used in ophthalmic preparations as a preservative and buffer due to its antimicrobial activity[3][5]. Its mechanism of action involves disrupting microbial cell processes at high concentrations over prolonged exposure[3]. Boric acid is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract but poorly through intact skin; it is excreted mainly unchanged via the kidneys[3].
