Overview

Borneol is a naturally occurring bicyclic monoterpene alcohol found in various plants such as *Cinnamomum camphora*, rosemary, and *Blumea balsamifera*. It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine as an "orifice-opening" agent for resuscitative purposes. Pharmacologically, borneol is notable for its ability to transiently and reversibly increase the permeability of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), thereby enhancing central nervous system (CNS) drug delivery when co-administered with other agents. This effect is thought to involve modulation of ATP-binding cassette transporters (including P-glycoprotein), tight junction proteins, and vasodilatory neurotransmitters. Borneol also exhibits antithrombotic activity through anticoagulant effects rather than direct antiplatelet action and can influence levels of amino acid neurotransmitters in the brain[1][3][5]. It is used both as an adjuvant to improve CNS drug bioavailability and directly in some traditional medicinal preparations.
