Overview

Boroleum is a classic over-the-counter (OTC) topical nasal ointment that has been used since 1906 to soothe and protect dry, sore, and irritated nasal passages, as well as chapped lips and minor skin irritations. Originally developed by Sinclair Pharmacal and currently manufactured and distributed by Reliable-1 Laboratories, Boroleum is formulated with active ingredients including camphor (1%), menthol (0.54%), and white petrolatum (97.92%), along with inactive ingredients eucalyptol and methyl salicylate. It functions as an external analgesic and skin protectant. Menthol and camphor act on transient receptor potential (TRP) channels (such as TRPM8, TRPV1, TRPV3, and TRPA1) to produce a cooling, soothing, and mild anesthetic sensation that relieves pain and itching. White petrolatum serves as an occlusive barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss, helping to moisturize and protect the skin barrier from harsh, dry, or cold climates.
