Boron-10 fenuron (Farron) is a boron-containing small molecule developed as a boron carrier for use in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The compound is designed to selectively accumulate within tumor cells. Following administration, the patient is irradiated with a beam of low-energy thermal or epithermal neutrons. The boron-10 atoms within the tumor capture these neutrons and undergo a nuclear fission reaction, releasing high-energy alpha particles and lithium-7 nuclei. These particles have a very short range (approximately 5-9 micrometers), which allows for the targeted destruction of malignant cells while minimizing damage to adjacent healthy tissue. Boron-10 fenuron is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials in China, specifically for the treatment of locally recurrent or advanced head and neck cancers, often utilizing the HyBorSys accelerator-based BNCT system.
