Boronophenylalanine + fructose is a combination of the synthetic amino acid L-p-boronophenylalanine (BPA) and fructose. This formulation is primarily used as a boron delivery agent in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), an experimental cancer treatment. In this context, the addition of fructose increases the solubility of BPA for intravenous administration. After administration and subsequent neutron irradiation, the boron-10 isotope in BPA absorbs neutrons and undergoes nuclear reactions that selectively destroy tumor cells where the compound has accumulated. The mechanism relies on tumor-selective uptake via amino acid transporters such as LAT1. The combination is not itself cytotoxic but acts as a carrier for targeted radiotherapy[1][2][9].
