Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Borraginol M is an approved, non-steroidal, Category 2 over-the-counter (OTC) hemorrhoid treatment developed and marketed by Amato Pharmaceutical Products (a subsidiary of Rohto Pharmaceutical). Originating from research at Kyoto University Hospital, Borraginol M is available in two formulations: suppositories for rectal administration (primarily for internal hemorrhoids) and an ointment for topical application (primarily for external hemorrhoids and anal fissures). Unlike the Borraginol A and Premium series, the M series is completely steroid-free, making it suitable for individuals concerned about steroid use, such as pregnant or lactating women. The product contains four active ingredients: lidocaine (a local anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels to relieve pain and itching), glycyrrhetinic acid (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits corticosteroid 11-beta-dehydrogenase to suppress inflammation), allantoin (a tissue repair promoter that activates imidazoline receptors to accelerate wound healing), and tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E acetate, which binds to alpha-tocopherol transfer protein to improve peripheral blood circulation and relieve congestion).
