Overview

Boswellia carterii extract is a botanical preparation derived from the gum resin of the Boswellia carterii tree, commonly known as frankincense. The extract is rich in pentacyclic triterpenes known as boswellic acids, with 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) being one of the most potent bioactive components. These compounds function primarily by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, which are mediators of inflammation. In clinical settings, such as the pilot study conducted by Mansoura University, the extract is being evaluated for its ability to manage symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) by mitigating intestinal inflammation and improving gastrointestinal function. It is typically administered orally in standardized formulations containing a high percentage of boswellic acids.
