Overview

Boswellia serrata is a tree native to India, Africa, and Arabia whose resin (commonly known as frankincense or olibanum) has been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda. Extracts from the sap and bark are primarily used for their anti-inflammatory properties in conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. The main active constituents are boswellic acids. Mechanistically, boswellic acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-1 enzymes involved in inflammation. They also suppress nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling and reduce proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Additional effects include antioxidant activity by increasing catalase and superoxide dismutase levels; modulation of apoptotic pathways; neuroprotective effects via upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor; immunomodulatory actions; antiproliferative/cytotoxic effects on certain cancer cell lines; antimicrobial activity; analgesic/antiarthritic benefits through reduction of pain/stiffness in joints[3][5][6]. Despite its widespread use for inflammatory disorders and other indications like diabetes or stroke prevention, robust clinical evidence supporting many uses is limited[1][2][4].
