Overview

Boswellia thurifera is a species of the Boswellia genus known for its gum resin, commonly referred to as frankincense. The gum resin is used traditionally in Ayurveda and other folk medicines. The main active compounds in Boswellia extracts are **boswellic acids**, which exhibit **anti-inflammatory**, **antiarthritic**, and **analgesic** activities. These actions are primarily due to inhibition of the **5-lipoxygenase (5-LO)** enzyme, leading to reduced leukotriene synthesis, as well as inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) signaling[4][5][7]. Boswellia is used for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and certain cancers. It may be administered orally or topically.
