Overview

BOTHDEL is an oral gastrointestinal contrast medium used to enhance visualization during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures. The active ingredient is manganese chloride tetrahydrate, an inorganic small molecule. Upon oral administration, the manganese ions (Mn2+) act as a paramagnetic agent, shortening the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) of water protons in the gastrointestinal tract. This results in increased signal intensity on T1-weighted images, allowing for better delineation of the stomach and duodenum. It was co-developed and launched in Japan by Meiji Dairies Corporation (now Meiji) and Kyowa Hakko Kogyo (now Kyowa Kirin).
