Overview

Bothrops antivenom (specifically referring to the freeze-dried trivalent antivenom, FDTAV) is a lyophilized biologic antivenom developed jointly by the Instituto de Biologia do Exército (Army Institute of Biology) and the Instituto Butantan in Brazil. It consists of F(ab')₂ fragments of equine immunoglobulin-based antibodies raised against the venoms of Bothrops, Lachesis, and Crotalus snake species. Designed to overcome the cold-chain storage limitations of standard liquid antivenoms, FDTAV can be stored at room temperature, making it highly suitable for remote tropical regions like the Amazon. It has been evaluated in a Phase IIb clinical trial in the Brazilian Amazon, demonstrating comparable safety and efficacy to standard liquid antivenoms in treating mild to moderate envenomings from these snake genera.
