Overview

Bothrops-Lachesis antivenom (also known as the freeze-dried trivalent antivenom, or FDTAV) is a biologic antivenom developed by the Institute of Biology of the Army (Instituto de Biologia do Exército, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in collaboration with the Butantan Institute (São Paulo, Brazil). It is a freeze-dried (lyophilized) formulation designed to treat snakebite envenomings caused by Bothrops, Lachesis, and Crotalus species. The active ingredient consists of immunoglobulins (antibodies) raised against the venoms of these three snake genera, targeting their coagulant, hemorrhagic, proteolytic, neurotoxic, and myotoxic activities. The drug's modality is a biologic (antivenom immunoglobulin). Its key advantage over standard liquid antivenoms is that freeze-drying enables cold-chain-free storage, making it more suitable for remote tropical regions. It was evaluated in a prospective, randomized, open-label Phase IIb clinical trial conducted from June 2005 to May 2008 in the Brazilian Amazon, comparing its safety and efficacy against the standard liquid antivenom provided by the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
