Overview

Botryosphaeran is an exocellular (1→3)(1→6)-β-D-glucan produced by the fungus *Botryosphaeria rhodina* MAMB-05. It is a fungal polysaccharide that has demonstrated antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects in preclinical models, specifically in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The mechanism of action involves the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the Forkhead transcription factor FOXO3a, which subsequently increases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and caspase-3. Additionally, botryosphaeran treatment leads to the inhibition of p70S6K and the induction of oxidative stress, contributing to its antitumor activity.
