Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of botulinum toxin (most commonly type A) and a corticosteroid (corticoid). Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin protein that inhibits acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions, leading to temporary muscle paralysis or relaxation. It is widely used for conditions such as dystonia, spasticity, chronic migraine, hyperhidrosis, and cosmetic indications like wrinkle reduction[1][6][7][8]. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory agents that suppress immune responses and reduce inflammation in various tissues. The combination of botulinum toxin type A with a corticosteroid has been studied primarily for the treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars. Clinical evidence suggests this combination provides superior outcomes compared to corticosteroids alone in reducing scar thickness, pain, itching, and improving patient satisfaction[2]. The mechanism involves both the inhibition of fibroblast proliferation by the steroid and reduced muscle tension/contraction by the neurotoxin.
